R&D Engineers and Physicists for Integrated Quantum Technologies

CSIC- The Spanish National Research Council is the biggest research institution in Spain comprising 120 institutes where more than ten thousand employees are pushing the frontiers of Science.

The Institute of Micro and Nanotechnology (IMN, CSIC) is an applied research institute with ~25 research staff and ~ 50 postdocs and PhDs integrated in the Excellence Campus CSIC-UAM. It combines the best from university and research institutions to conduct research in different areas of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology, at the intersection of Physics, Biology and Material Science.

IMN-CSIC is also part of the QTEP+ directive, whereby 10 CSIC research institutes try to push the boundaries of Quantum Science and Technology. The contribution of the IMN to this field lies on its wide experience on the fabrication and characterization of nanophotonic and nano-electronic devices for quantum communications and quantum sensing applications.

R&D Area 1: Upscaling the fabrication and validation of Integrated Quantum Communication Devices

Description of Project: Mass production of novel quantum photonic and electronic devices is of paramount importance to supply the upcoming quantum communications market. A key element for this market, not yet available, are reliable and cost effective ultrabright single photon and entangled photon pair sources. For more than 20 years, the MBE-QNFO group at IMN-CSIC has developed such sources using highly optimized semiconductor heterostructures and nanostructures and the latest micro-planar nanofabrication techniques available in our clean rooms. Within QTEP+, we plan to upscale these processes to arrive to volume production of these sources and other related quantum technologies. Patented proprietary designs will be exploited and state of the art nano-characterization and nanofabrication techniques will be used towards this goal. Optical and electronic design and characterization of integrated quantum photonic devices

R&D Area 2: Development of Novel Quantum Sensing Schemes based on Optomechanical Systems

Description of Project: The study of the phenomena that emerge at the frontiers between nano-mechanics and nano-optics opens the door for a plethora of novel applications in quantum sensing by using optomechanical devices. The main objective of the project is the pumping of the confined optical energy inside engineered nano-photonics-cavities into the mechanical modes of nano-electro-mechanical-systems (NEMS). The ultimate goal is the enhancement of the mechanical quality factor of a suspended diamond membrane to improve the sensing performance via the nonlinear potential imposed by an optical cavity. Optomechanical Q enhancement will enable game-changing technology for quantum sensing offering the simultaneous advantages of high sensitivity and unprecedented optical bandwidth while exploring novel configurations and materials.
